Varietal vines

In common parlance, a vine is characterized by the shape of its leaves and its clusters.  At Botany there is a cultivar that is to say a variety of population composed of genetically different but with similar characteristics, rather than a variety of vines in the botanical sense.

The vine can be propagated by vegetative means (cuttings, layering or grafting).
The vine is comprised of 2 parts: the rootstock (vine selected for quality from its roots in the ground) and aerial part, the graft (giving good wine grapes).

The vine was the insignia of the Roman centurion.

The vine is a plant that mutates very easily; it happens that the same plant produces two different grapes. Thus, the pinot gris and pinot blanc are mutations of Pinot Noir. The study of grapes called the ampelography.

We distinguish vine grapes intended for wine production, and table grapes, for the production of table grapes.  In France, about 200 varieties are allowed. The winemaker, since March 4th 2009, found the choice of wine grape in countries more regulated.
