Taste French Wine

French wines are known throughout the world as some of the most magnificent wines in production.  The French also take great pride in producing the best wine possible which is why there are many  wine regions throughout  French wine country.

In fact, some French vineyards are so immense that they make up entire villages.

Due to this fact France produces the most wine in the entire world.

Some of the most prominent French wines are French Bordeaux wine, French white wine, French red wine, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay , and Burgundy wine.

Although most French wines that are sold internationally tend to be high end wines, most of the French wine sold within the actual country is more modestly priced.  A simple tour through some of the more prominent French wine regions will usually include plenty of wine tasting opportunities.

Most French wines are made from a mixture of several grape varieties such as merlot, Grenache, and syrah which is why French white wine is more common and popular than French red wine.

Historically, most French wine was consumed within the country however in the last forty years the emphasis has switched and now many wine producers relay on foreign markets heavily to buy French wine in order to sustain their farms.

Given the popularity of French wines within the foreign market one of the main tourist activities of France are guided tours of prominent French vineyards.

France is one of the countries of Latin heritage where wine is an integral part of its culture.  French culture has invested in developing its wine and has even earned itself the international reputation of being “the” Wine Country.

This reputation is not entirely objective or entirely deserved, as Spain and Italy are the only two countries in the world that annually compete with France in terms of liters of production wine per year.

Even if the product quality is subjective (or the question of taste), France is still the country with the larges selection.  INAO identifies 3,022 products (wine) in different trade products grouped under 1,371 names.

Wine is an alcoholic beverage obtained by fermentation of grapes, fruit of the vines (Vitis vinifera).  In Europe, by legal definition, wine is the product obtained exclusively by alcoholic fermentation, total or partial, of fresh grapes, whether crushed or not.  The transformation of grapes into wine is called vinification.
